Author: Lee Mercer
Average review score:

Great book. Very informative.
great book. very informative. Easy reading. All the info you will need to plan your trip.

The last true wilderness adventure in the lower 48 states.
This is more than a guidebook; it is an enticing narrative into a remote and spectacular wilderness land. Lee Mercer and Ralph Maughan lead you into the untraveled nooks and crannies of the Yellowstone Ecosystem with grace and respect for this most magnificant of landscapes. This is the best written, most informative, and most readable guidebook I've ever encountered. The photo quality makes the reader salivate for a chance to encounter this spectacular wilderness land in the first person. This book has something for everyone---from short day hikes to two week backpacking trips. Tips and suggstions abound, as the authors describe river crossings, grizzly country etiquette, trip planning, and off-trail segments in painstaking detail. The hikes in this guide book offers both the experienced and novice backcountry adventurer everything they've ever dreamed of, without the crowds found in Grand Teton National Park, Glacier, or the Wind Rivers. Once you start reading this, your first response is: I want to go hiking here! I read the book from cover to cover, and that is something I've never experienced before with any other guide book. This is a "must have" guide book to the last great place in the lower 48 states---big, rugged, wild, and utterly spectacular. Best of all, your solitude is assured. Buy a copy of this book, and prepare to be amazed!

Hire the Best...and Avoid the Rest

Helped me avoid many costly mistakes
As a solo chiropractic practitioner with no B-school background, this book came as a revelation to me! There is actually a systematic way to evaluate potential employees! Some of the chapters about psychometric testing, etc., applied more to small-to-midsize companies instead of micro companies like mine with 10 employees. Yet, I use the interview format from this book every single time I have a job opening for the last four years. What a difference it has made in my clinic staffing!

Excellent book to help plan an interview to hire the best!
Mercer offers practical help in how to determine exactly the kind of person you want to hire, and gives sample questions to help you get answers that will allow you to determine if that person is a match.

Journal of the Waterloo Campaign Kept Throughout the Campaign of 1815
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (September, 1995)
Author: Cavalie Mercer
Average review score:

Essential reading for anyone interested in Waterloo
Cavalie Mercer achieved fame in his own lifetime as the horse artillery Captain who disobeyed Wellington's orders to abandon the guns and take shelter with the infantry when the French cavalry closed in (he was afraid the infantry would run and they would all be butchered together). Hence, G Troop Royal Horse Artillery shot down three successive French charges almost at the gun muzzles. It was one of the hotter corners of a bitterly contested battlefield, and Mercer describes it graphically.

There is much more to this book, though, than the battle itself. Mercer's journal covers the campaign from G Troop's embarkation in England right through to the end of his service in the Allied Army of Occupation in France. He was a highly observant and analytically minded man, and a competent linguist, so the book is a fascinating window on the social scene in rural Belgium and northern France, and in occupied Paris.

Do not look for a grand strategic overview of the Waterloo campaign, or even a coherent picture of the whole battle. As a military testimonial, the journal records the day to day worries of a relatively junior officer (Mercer was only acting Commanding Officer), trying to keep his unit efficient for the day of battle - and put it back together again afterwards. For the battle itself, this is the classic soldier's view of Waterloo, restricted to a few hundred square yards of chaos and slaughter.

The journal was not published (nor intended to be published) in Mercer's own lifetime, and is consequently largely free of the self-justification prevalent in many military memoirs. He is inclined to whinge about his failure to get accelerated promotion as a reward for the campaign (he believed, correctly or not, that Wellington viewed him with disfavour) but these are only occasional sour notes in a narrative which is generally remarkably light-hearted and humorous considering the events it covers.

Experience Waterloo as if you were there...
This book, written from the journals of Captain, later General, Mercer, kept while commanding the G Troop Royal Horse Artillary, gives a detailed account of the time. He is a skilled writer, provides lots of details which bring the work to life, and is individualistic enough to appeal to the modern reader. Some of the battle scenes, revealing the incredible suffering of men and horses are hard to read, but give a feel for the reality of war.

Here is a sample of his writing: ""19th, The cool air of the morning lasted not long; the rising sun soon burst in all his glory over our bloody bivouac, and all nature rose into renewed life, except the victims of ambition which lay unconscious of his presence. I had not been up many minutes when one of my seargents came up to ask if they might bury Driver Crammond. "And why particularily Driver Crammond?" "Because he looks frightful, sir, and many of us have not had a wink of sleep for him." Curious! I walked over to the spot where he lay and certainly a more frightful site cannot be imagined...""

Just Mt Friend And Me
Just My Friend And Me was a great book. It told you how you would play with your friend when he/she came over. It showed how to help your friend when he/she gets hurt. In someways once you have a friend come over you can't wait for them to leave so you can be a lone and do stuff you want to do and not have someone else want to do something different. Well, I hope this gives you a good idea of what this book is about. I hope all of the little children will enjoy this book. I know I did.

The book of best friends for children
The book is two thumbs up by me for my littel sisters and cousins. I think this book is a very good book for children 1-5. I would recomend this book to any one

The Life of Mendelssohn
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (December, 1900)
Author: Peter Mercer-Taylor
Average review score:

Tracing of Significant Composer
Mendelssohn is traced through his life as to influences, both spiritually, musically and elsewhere.

Raised in upper class surroundings, he and sister Fanny were certainly cultivated in rich musical and literary heritage. So no surprise that Mendelssohn honored his musical heritiage and was fond of Bach especially.

Climb to fame capsulated well in this biographical look with specific references given at appropriate times on musical and theological insights. This all culminates late in his life with tension over all his duties both musically and family and they take their toil.

Never happy living in Germany, persistently traveling which also for sure took its toll. Creative output continues to reverberate throughtout concert halls.

Truly a tightly written account of significant musical contributor.

An Extremely Enjoyable Experience
With a smooth and easy-to-read style that is brimming with factual details and emotive feelings, Mr. Mercer-Taylor's writing provides a concise and highly articulate story of Felix Mendelssohn's life. Mendelssohn's many significant contributions as a composer, musician, conductor, teacher and adminstrator are presented in an interesting collage of personalities and historical events of the times. In particular, the author's description of Mendelssohn's music captures its essence perfectly. An extremely enjoyable reading experience.

Little Critter's the Picnic

Author: Mercer Mayer
Average review score:

Nicely illustrated, cute story
There is just one little message in this book: "there's no place like home."

The Little Critter's search for the best picnic spot, only to find trouble at one spot after another. They discover that the important thing is that they're spending time together, and that they just might find that home is the best place after all.

Another sweet Mercer Mayer story, with lovely illustrations.

The Picnic
A very good book to teach little one's that 1-mom and dad make mistakes too and 2- that even at home you can have fun.

Me and My Flying Machine
If I could only explain just how this book has inspired me. I was givin this book from my parents in the early 70's and somehow till this day has been a part of me and Im 35 now! I love how the boys discovery leads to a creation and how his dreams inspire his desire to perfect his project. Win races, rescue people, deliver mail, give birds a place to rest when flying. When he decides it is just right, he finally tries to get it out of the barn just to have it fall to pieces! Even after his terrible failure he still isnt willing give up trying to create..."tomarrow Ill build a rowboat" Terrific.

A Very Wonderful & Heartwarming Story!
I remember reading this book over and over as a small child. I read it so many times that I wore out the binder on the book. It's a story of a small boy and how he builds a flying machine out of scrapes and paints it with all the colors he can find in the family shed and takes off on an adventure around the world. I would love to find this book and keep it around for future generations to read, not only this story but all the other wonderful stories written by Marianna Mayer. Thank you.....C.M.....

Mommy's CD Helper
My son has mild autism and it's been quite a challenge trying to find a book on print or CD that would hold his attention. He was 3 yrs old when he received the CD from a friend of mine. Something about Little Critter brought my son out and it's been a "Grandma and me, grandma and me" life for him since then.

It's the favorite of the 3-5 crowd
The hours of fun little ones have with this book and cd-rom make this a great value. The story, illustrations and games are just great.

Midnight Snack
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Mercer Mayer, Tony Geiss, and Erica Farber
Average review score:

A fun book for all!
My son loves this book. There are a few words (midnight, knock, night) that might be difficult for kids that are truly just starting to sound words out. But, if they don't mind having a grown-up help with those few words, they can sound out most of the rest by themselves.

If you read this to your children, you just can't help using a fun voice for "Groad" the cook.

This book along with others in the "Critters of the Night" series are a lot of fun for the kids. My son just turned six and has loved having them read to him for a long time as well as looking at and discussing the entertaining illustrations. Now he enjoys reading them himself. "Critters of the Night" and "Little Critter" books belong on every child's bookshelf!

Midnight Snack (Mercer Mayer's Critters Of The Night)
This is a great beginning reader book! The cast of monsters appeal to children without being too scary. The colorful illustrations make this a fun book to read. The rhyming story is perfect for early elementary school childern learning rhyming sounds. My six-year-old felt a real sense of accomplishment when he was able to read this book himself. He even choose this book to take to school to read to his class. We also like "No Howling In The House" and "Purple Pickle Juice" in this series of readers.
